Welcome to Leg Ulcer Clinic

The Leg Ulcer Clinic Service delivered across North East Essex is for service users who have a lower leg wound that has been present for longer than six weeks.

Within the six-week period of care delivered by the GP surgery's practice nurse, the patient should have received a full holistic assessment including a lower limb assessment and ABPI (ankle brachial pressure index). This would identify the wound origin and cause (venous, mixed or arterial) to then provide the correct and appropriate care to be delivered following best practice.

The service will carry out regular monitoring and assessment including wound description to identify if the wound is healing.

The service can make an onward referral to the vascular team if appropriate. If venous or mixed cause wounds that are suitable for compression are present at week six, a referral to the Leg Ulcer Clinic is essential.

If the patient has a known arterial disease that contraindicates compression treatment, they would not be deemed relevant for the Leg Ulcer Clinic.

All referrals will be triaged and, if appropriate, an appointment will be offered at the Leg Ulcer Clinic (appropriate/suitable for compression therapy).

Where is the service provided?

Leg ulcer clinics are run across North East Essex five days a week in a variety of venues. When an appointment is offered, a suitable venue will be discussed.

How to access the service

Referrals can be made via a patient's  own GP surgery following six weeks of care and treatment within their surgery.
