'Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a multi-disciplinary programme of care that is individually tailored and designed to optimise patients' physical and social performance and autonomy (NICE).'
Pulmonary Rehabilitation should be offered to all patients who consider themselves functionally disabled by their breathing condition, yet a large proportion of patients will have COPD. Pulmonary Rehabilitation is not suitable for patients with limiting musculo-skeletal conditions, those who have unstable angina or who have had a recent Myocardial Infarction.
In practice this means that patients will be offered an eight week programme where they are expected to attend twice weekly for two hours. The first and last sessions will be assessments: firstly to establish patients' levels of fitness before and after the rehab, but also to design their individual exercise programme. The rest of the sessions will include one hour of exercising followed by an hour of education to help patients develop skills in order to manage their condition optimally. There will not be more than 16 patients per group.
