How to access the service

Referral Criteria

  • The child should present with physical difficulties and or/ problems with mobility which impact on their everyday function: their ability to achieve their motor milestones, develop gross motor skills, or which affect their balance and/ or strength.
  • These difficulties should impact on the child’s functional performance at home, at school and/or in extra-curricular activities.
  • Children and young people aged 0 – 18, or 19 if in special education.
  • Children with a North East Essex GP
  • Children in permanent residence in North East Essex.
  • Children not resident within North East Essex, but who attend school in the area, where the main reason for referral relates to problems in P.E. or with mobility problems accessing the school environment.

In the first instance referrals must be made by a Professional, for example:

  • GP
  • Paediatrician or Specialist Registrar
  • Medical specialists eg orthopaedic surgeons, neurologist, oncologists.
  • Health Visitor
  • Health Improvement Nurse (formerly school nurse)
  • Community nurse
  • Allied Health Professionals e.g. podiatrist, therapist
  • Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator with supporting medical information from GP or relevant health professional
  • Social Worker


If your child has been known to the service previously you can refer them back to us on the following conditions: 

  • Your child was not discharged from the service for failing to attend appointments
  • Your child is being re-referred for the same condition

Once the referral has been received it will be triaged by a Physiotherapist to see if it meets our acceptance criteria. Once the referral has been accepted your child will either be placed on the waiting list or be directly allocated to a Physiotherapist. This will depend on the concerns raised by the referrer. 


If the referral cannot be accepted both you and the referrer will be notified.
