ACE’s Falls Prevention Team wins National Innovation Award!

On the 26th November 2014 ACE’s Falls Prevention Team - recognised as one of the most successful in the country for hospital admission avoidance - won the National Innovation Challenge Prize in the ‘Reducing Avoidable Attendance in Primary Care’ category, receiving not only national recognition but also a £50K award for the organisation.

Simba said: “Falls represent the most frequent and serious type of injury for anyone over the age of 65 years and account for 18 per cent of A&E admissions.  It is imperative therefore to do everything we can to reduce the risk of falls.

We are working closely with the East of England Ambulance Service, Colchester Hospital University Foundation NHS Trust and the area’s care homes to increase the number of people being referred to us who are at risk of falls.  In 2011/12, our service received almost 5,000 referrals and we estimate our work not only saved an awful lot of patient suffering, but saved the NHS at least £1.7 million by reducing the number of hip fracture operations resulting from falls.  The number of ambulance call-outs across North East Essex to people in the 65-plus group living in their own homes with falls has dropped from 277 in April 2011 to 116 in December 2012”.

"We are visiting care homes and providing falls prevention training to their staff and also working with individuals who have been identified as being at particular risk of falls and this is also proving a successful part of our strategy.”
